Richmond is rich in history and architecture, with more than 50 historic buildings, many of them dating from the 1820s. When originally founded, Richmond was an important convict station that linked Hobart with Port Arthur, and is known for housing fascinating landmarks including Australia’s oldest gaol (built in 1825) Australia’s oldest Catholic church (built in 1836) and Australia’s oldest bridge (built in 1820).
Richmond is famous for its elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings dating back as early as the 1820’s effortlessly blending with modern galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums. Conveniently located just 20 minutes’ drive from the Hobart CBD and 15 minutes’ from Hobart airport, Richmond is an ideal base from which to explore southern Tasmania.
